What Do We Mean by Vaccinations for Children and Why are they so Important?

The birth of a baby comes with so many responsibilities for you as parents. Being at the developing stage of life, they are more prone to harmful germs that can directly influence their immune system. Thus, to ensure perfect health and immune system of your child, you need to have clear understanding about different vaccinations for children. Every vaccination has a distinctive role to play in the overall development and growth of your child.

What are vaccines?

Vaccines are measures that are responsible for stimulating your immune system whenever germs (or antigens) try to enter your child’s body. They generally contain a bit weakened version of the virus or its equivalent that helps their immune system to create right antibodies for fighting with such foreign substances. The impact of these vaccinations remains throughout your lifetime. In fact, with the help of these vaccines, so many childhood diseases rarely occur to any child.

Role of vaccines

The very idea behind vaccination for children is to provide immunity from different diseases before they make your child ill. Although, it is a safe alternative for prevention, it may have some mild side effects on your child like soreness, fever or lump on the skin. However, certain special health conditions may require no vaccination for your child. For example, if your child already has certain diseases or cancer, and taking drugs for it, the vaccinations may result adversely. Under such situation, you should consult your doctor about the advantages as well as disadvantages of any vaccination.

Different types of vaccinations

Being vulnerable to so many killing childhood diseases, your child needs vaccination for every disease. Some of the most common vaccinations for children include –
  1. Flu vaccine –
  2. Also named influenza vaccine, flu vaccine available through both nasal spray and shot. With the onset of flu season between October and November, you can give this vaccination shot to your children who are older than 6 months in age. However, the nasal spray is ideal and safe for children above 2 years in age. You should get this vaccination every year for your child to avoid any complications as the flu virus changes annually.
  3. DTaP vaccine –
  4. This vaccination contains 3 different vaccines in 1 shot that protects your child from three serious diseases such as tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria. Incorporating a course of 5 shots, you need to give the first shot to your child at the age of 2 months. However, you are your child is between 4 to 6 years, you can give the last shot. It is capable of preventing your children for over 10 years.
  5. Rotavirus vaccine –
  6. Rotavirus is also a serious virus that can cause diarrhea and even dehydration to children. This vaccine of either 2 doses or 3 doses can protect your child from its adverse effects. The ideal age for 2 doses is two and four months whereas for 3 doses, it is 2 months, 4 months and 6 months.
  7. IPV vaccine –
  8. Provided in 4 shots, beginning from 2 months of age to 6 years, this vaccine provides protection from polio. It also keeps your child away from its ill effects such as paralysis and muscle pain.
  9. MMR vaccine –
  10. This vaccine is useful in protecting your child from diseases like mumps, measles and rubella. You can the first shot of it when your child is one year old and the other when he is between 4-6 years.
Summary: Vaccinations for children are equally important as their food to keep them healthy and enhance their immunity. They protect your children from all types of serious diseases that occur in the childhood.
